Multi-cancer Early Screening (Genetic Testing)

Why Is Multi-cancer Early Screening (Genetic Testing) Important?

There were 37,953 new cancer incidence cases a year in Hong Kong, representing an average of 104 new cases daily. The top 6 most common cancers, lung, breast, colorectum, prostate, liver and corpus uteri, accounted for over 60% of all cancers. (according to the HK Cancer Registry 2023 data1). Some of them might show no symptoms in the early stages, earlier detection is associated with better survival2.

Multi-cancer early screening is a genetic testing technology performed using a blood sample. It analyses cancer-related genetic signals circulating in the blood to help identify potential cancer risks. Unlike traditional cancer screening plans that focus on a single organ, multi-cancer screening can assess cancer risks across multiple organ systems simultaneously, helping identify individuals who may require further investigation.

Tamarind Specialists’ Multi-Cancer Early Screening uses advanced genetic testing technology to analyse cancer-related signals in the blood, helping assess the risk of multiple common cancers and providing guidance for individuals who may require further investigations or specialist follow-up.

Key Screening Items

The plan uses a blood sample for genetic testing to analyse cancer-related biological signals and assess the risk of multiple common cancers. Its coverage ranges from 6 types of cancers that have a high incidence or mortality rate in Hong Kong, to men and women essential cancers, to a comprehensive screening of 50 cancers. Screening options may also be personalised according to your family history, dietary habits, lifestyle, and individual preferences.

The testing process does not require fasting, radiation exposure, or invasive procedures, making it suitable as part of a comprehensive health risk assessment.

A World Health Organization report indicates that obesity is a contributing factor to 13 types of cancer4. Multiple studies have also shown that diabetes and certain metabolic abnormalities related to the “three highs” (high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol) may increase the risk of certain cancers. Therefore, this programme includes relevant health indicators to help you understand your overall health profile and manage potential health risks at an earlier stage.

Test results will be reviewed by a specialist together with your personal medical history, family history, and other health information to provide a comprehensive assessment.

The following individuals may wish to consider multi-cancer early detection screening:

  • Individuals aged 40 or above
  • Individuals at higher risk of cancer (family history, dietary habits, or lifestyle factors)
  • Individuals concerned about their personal health and cancer risk
  • Individuals who wish to assess cancer risk through a non-invasive approach

If you are already experiencing persistent unexplained weight loss, pain, bleeding, or other suspicious symptoms, you are advised to seek medical attention promptly rather than relying solely on screening results.

What is the Follow-Up after Screening?

After completing the genetic test, a Family Medicine Specialist will help interpret the results.

The doctor will provide personalised follow-up recommendations based on:

  • Genetic testing results
  • Personal medical history
  • Family history
  • Current health status
  • Cancer risk factors

If abnormal signals are identified during screening, the doctor may recommend:

  • Relevant imaging examinations of the affected organ system
  • Additional blood tests
  • Specialist referral
  • Regular health monitoring

Screening results are intended for risk assessment and do not constitute a cancer diagnosis.

What are the Advantages of Multi-cancer Early Screening (genetic testing)?

The genetic testing utilises Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology. With a single blood draw, it detects and analyses circulating tumour nucleic acids released from cancer cells, achieving 88% accuracy in tumour localisation and up to 99% specificity, effectively reducing false-positives.

This is a non-invasive test that does not involve radiation exposure. It can simultaneously assess the risk of multiple cancers and may help identify individuals who require further investigation at an earlier stage.

FAQ

Can genetic testing detect all cancers?
No. The test can help assess the risk of multiple cancers, but it does not cover every type of cancer.
Does an abnormal result mean I already have cancer?
Not necessarily. An abnormal result only indicates that there may be risk signals requiring further evaluation.
Can genetic testing replace colonoscopy or breast imaging?
No. Genetic testing and organ-specific cancer screening serve different purposes and can complement one another.
At what age is this test recommended?
Individuals aged 40 or above, those at higher cancer risk (family history, dietary habits, or lifestyle factors), and individuals who wish to proactively undergo multi-cancer early screening may consult a doctor to determine whether the test is appropriate for them.
Do I need to fast before the test?
Fasting is generally not required. Specific arrangements should follow the doctor’s recommendations.
Will a doctor explain my results after the test?
Yes. A Family Medicine Specialist will review and explain your genetic testing report and provide appropriate follow-up recommendations.
What happens if an abnormal result is identified?
Based on the test findings and your individual risk profile, the doctor may recommend relevant imaging studies, specialist referral, or further diagnostic investigations.
